For anyone interested in doing some programming challenges I would recommend Hackthissite.

It's a site aimed mainly at those interested in website security but their programming challenges seem pretty cool.

I've personally only done the first programming challenge so far but if you do go there and need any help with the other challenges let me know.

How To Run A Perl Script:

Knowing perl syntax is a bit useless if you cant execute your code, so here's a guide.

If you're using any variation of unix (so that includes mac osX and just about any linux) then you should have perl already installed, in which case you can skip the next part.

If you are using windows, then you will need to download and install activeperl.

Once you have perl you can execute code from the command line, the usual command would be >perl yourfilename.pl

Basic Looping

The two most popular loop structures are for and while.

in a while loop is written as such:

The while loops checks whether or not the condition is true or false, if it is true then the code in the braces in executed and then the condition is checked again after each execution. If the condition is false then the code is skipped and the program continues from the closing brace.

A for loop is slightly different and ...

Very Simple Encrypt/Decrypt

I made a very simple encryption which is a slight variation of a caesar cypher. Instead of having a fixed shift the shift changes according to each letter's position in the word.

This is very easily broken and not really useful for security, was just practicing my perl. May possibly continue to extend this project though to create a genuine encryption algorithm.
